Political crisis and its implications on Pakistan’s economy.
By : Syed Wakeel Ahmed
The continuous crisis which ushered in the beginning of 2022 and yet to be over.
Presumably there is never been stability in Political crisis in Pakistan, but current crisis in the country are very cataclysmic. Basically the onset of these crisis are connected to the ending times of general parvez Musharaf’s regime “scholars claim, in 2007 after declaring emergency in the country Musharaf’s regime seemed not stable due to lawyer’s movement against him which impelled Musharaf to resign as COAS.
Amongst all these crisis country also witnessed assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Musharaf’s regime.
That was the actual time where Political crisis, security concern and economic crisis simultaneously started growing improbably in the country at peak.
Then the 2013 election’s which were itself controversial by that time and were called rigged by Imran Khan who was in the opposition then, where we also saw the biggest set-in of 126 days in history by PTI, where country then faced APS horrific terrorist attack in Peshawar.
In 2016 Nawaz sharif was ousted from his PM ship in Panama case by Supreme Court.
The 2018 election’s were also called rigged by the opposition parties although Imran Khan’s coalitions government was formed, but was not accepted by the opposition parties which was challenged and labelled as selected regime rather elected.
Then in 2021 county observe’s political growth and Imran Khan’s government faces several concerning issuances.
The Long march of PPP and then an Alliance of parties was formed named as (PDM)
In 2022 PDM tabled no confidence motion against Imran khan and ousted him as PM, since then Imran Khan is in a protest campaign rethlessly for the reason that his ouster was a plot based, what he initially calls internal and external conspiracy. But gradually he changed his direction of protest movement from conspiracy to early elections in the country which at the moment are completely opposed by the PDM regime.
The conflicts in the country are never from 2008 ruthlessly Pakistan have always gone through such crisis since it’s procreation.
On of the major factors in Political crisis are Questionable elections in the country. Every five year’s we see those parties thwarted in winning elections refuse to accept the defeat and call it establishment conspiracy or pre-polling or after poll conspiracy.
Not happening of free and fair elections in the country are itself a massive dilemma.
There is always been a civil military divide in Pakistan, tug and war between civil governments and military administration on various issues.
Memo gates scandal in PPP regime, Dawn leaks in Nawaz sharif’s regime and in current Imran Khan’s regime the main issue was on the appointment of DGISI in October last year.
So we see instant consequences of civil military deveides on Political lands, the ouster’s of PM’s from there offices somehow are affiliated with military concerns, like Memo gates, dawn leaks etc.
Apart from all these factors, one of the most determined and pivotal factor is weak and hung parliament, a parliament that works as a rubber stamp.
In Pakistan weather they are political leaders, parliamentarians, judiciary, NAB, FIA or other institutions even military work for one agenda that is not forming a strong parliament.
Because tenuous parliament helps non elected institutions the most and this is not understood by those sitting in parliament.
Until parliament remains rubber stamp, the divide between parties and manipulation of parliamentarians by institutions and instability shall never end.
Economic crisis is also amongst the prime reason of political instability.
It is difficult to connect that Political crisis let to economical crisis or economic crisis let to political crisis, but both in either way influence each other.
When ever terrorism expands in Pakistan economical crisis accrues.
Even currently the campaign of Imran Khan looks successful against PDM is only because of savour economic crisis in country, and Pakistan’s status as a normal functioning economy has Jeopardise and been challenged by the threats of defaults.
It may not be directly linked with current government’s policies but people would ultimately hold the current government responsible for what’s ever is happening in the economic affairs.
These political crisis have many implications which includes Democracy suffering because of these crisis.
And this political drama in Pakistan is ultimately eroding the good points of democracy.
One of the major role in these crisis are of media too, which unfortunately is polarised, censorship on media,
Media playing role of catalyst largely, objectivity of media is missing, a media that do conflict management rather than inflating conflict.
One of the immediate solutions to all the chaos could be strengthening of the parliament.
In any democratic country Political stability is possible only if political leaders sits together and more importantly evaluate their issues in the parliament.
Problem in Pakistan is politician tries to solve political issues out of parliament instead solving them in the parliament.
Until parliaments are not strong and parliamentarians doesn’t negotiate remaining in parliament the crisis May never end.
And one of the next key issue to be solved is free and fair elections,
Avoid role of institutions, avoid pre-poll ragging, poll day ragging and post poll ragging which is very important.
Obviously until free and fair elections doesn’t happen the crisis May not end.
